Reese Lansangan and Franco come together for Coke Studio collaboration

Coke Studio does not only blur the lines between the OPM icon and the rising star, it also erases the lines between generations and music genres; just as it did with Reese Lansangan and Franco – a collaboration never before seen in the local music scene. The unconventional pairing brings about a whole new flavor with reggae-rock mixing with soft pop-folk.

Though they may seem like polar opposites, both share a running theme of adventure and exploration in their songs.  This theme is delivered in different ways, with Reese’s soft voice and acoustic guitars contrasting against Franco’s deep and rugged voice and distorted electric guitars, but both share a poetic touch. When asked about how they go about writing their songs, front man Franco Reyes simply answered, “It always starts with a feeling.”

Franco

Having more similarities with their themes and their song writing processes, Franco and Reese share an undeniable calling for music, a calling that could not be left unanswered. “There were other things that I also love to do, but somehow, kept on coming back to music,” Reese reminisced.  “I thought that I was on my way to a normal life, but the call of music was just there,” added Franco.

Prior to the studio sessions, Reese admitted that she felt pressured to be paired with such seasoned musicians but was pleasantly surprised when she met the band’s front man – Franco Reyes.  “And all that pressure on myself, and it turns out, he’s just a guy who likes to go on vacation!” she added.

Reese Lansangan
For Franco the collaboration was more about tweaking their sound to find the perfect blend with Reese. “I also felt that we had to adjust to her style, that’s my approach to collaboration,” he explained.

Franco also shared about the song writing process that went into the Coke Studio sessions. “I wanted a song that someone in high school, or even in grade school, would want to learn to play, so I just wanted a few chords.  And something universal, something that everyone could relate to,” he shared.  Reese went into more detail about the song. “It’s about that push and pull in a relationship, when you’re deciding whether to break up or not,” she explained.

With the song revolving around the struggles of a relationship, Franco was asked if he considered it a romantic song.  To this he answered, “Well, usually, if it’s a guy and a girl singing a song, there will be that energy.”   And when asked how he felt about their work in the studio, he answers immediately, “Happy!  Just like in that song, Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!”

Ebe Dancel and Autotelic mash up for purely Pinoy collaboration at Coke Studio

Nothing defines OPM more than the sweet melodic flow of the Filipino language to evoke a multitude of emotions. Artists like Ebe Dancel and Autotelic use the local language in most of their compositions, though in different genres. But at Coke Studio, this collaboration breathes a fresh life into the local music industry by fusing the soulful song writing of Ebe with the upbeat storytelling of Autotelic.

Ebe explained that he thinks of his song writing as a kind of advocacy. “There can never be enough Tagalog songs,” he adds. He spoke of the innate rhythmic quality to the Filipino language and continued by saying that it was a plus that Autotelic used the same medium in their music.

Ebe Dancel

Band members of Autotelic admitted that they were initially pressured about the pairing because of their admiration for their collaborator and his mastery of the mother tongue. “He could be like the Balagtas for millennials,” exclaimed Josh Villena, vocalist and guitarist of Autotelic.

Finding inspiration is as easy as sitting calmly on a field and reflecting according to Ebe. “I wouldn't say that I am consciously or deliberately doing anything other than observing life,” he added. In the case of Autotelic, the process is anything but calm but just as effective. “It’s an explosion of ideas, a good mess,” said Kai, the band’s vocalist and keyboardist.

Autotelic

Despite these differences in song writing approach, the pairing complemented each other. “When we first got to the studio, they were going, ‘Let’s do this! Let’s do this!’  Sometimes, when you’ve been at it for a long time, you let things like worrying about getting away from traffic and all that fill your mind.  It’s good to get new energy,” said Ebe.

Raymund Marasigan, Coke Studio host, was also a witness to this energy.  “I like that when we ask them for one idea, they’ll give you back three!” he shared.

Ebe Dancel X Autotelic

The result of the collaborative effort is the song, Bahagi, which both Ebe and Josh describe as a song of hope. Bahagi plays with the word’s dual meanings as “a fragment” as well as “something to be shared”. The blending of the pairings’ unique sounds and styles are bound to give listeners a treat.

To hear Ebe Dancel and Autotelic’s Bahagi and other fresh and exciting collaborations, tune in to Coke Studio every Saturday at 7 p.m. on TV5 or on www.youtube.com/CokeStudio.
