Reese Lansangan and Franco come together for Coke Studio collaboration

Coke Studio does not only blur the lines between the OPM icon and the rising star, it also erases the lines between generations and music genres; just as it did with Reese Lansangan and Franco – a collaboration never before seen in the local music scene. The unconventional pairing brings about a whole new flavor with reggae-rock mixing with soft pop-folk.

Though they may seem like polar opposites, both share a running theme of adventure and exploration in their songs.  This theme is delivered in different ways, with Reese’s soft voice and acoustic guitars contrasting against Franco’s deep and rugged voice and distorted electric guitars, but both share a poetic touch. When asked about how they go about writing their songs, front man Franco Reyes simply answered, “It always starts with a feeling.”

Having more similarities with their themes and their song writing processes, Franco and Reese share an undeniable calling for music, a calling that could not be left unanswered. “There were other things that I also love to do, but somehow, kept on coming back to music,” Reese reminisced.  “I thought that I was on my way to a normal life, but the call of music was just there,” added Franco.

Prior to the studio sessions, Reese admitted that she felt pressured to be paired with such seasoned musicians but was pleasantly surprised when she met the band’s front man – Franco Reyes.  “And all that pressure on myself, and it turns out, he’s just a guy who likes to go on vacation!” she added.

For Franco the collaboration was more about tweaking their sound to find the perfect blend with Reese. “I also felt that we had to adjust to her style, that’s my approach to collaboration,” he explained.

Franco also shared about the song writing process that went into the Coke Studio sessions. “I wanted a song that someone in high school, or even in grade school, would want to learn to play, so I just wanted a few chords.  And something universal, something that everyone could relate to,” he shared.  Reese went into more detail about the song. “It’s about that push and pull in a relationship, when you’re deciding whether to break up or not,” she explained.

With the song revolving around the struggles of a relationship, Franco was asked if he considered it a romantic song.  To this he answered, “Well, usually, if it’s a guy and a girl singing a song, there will be that energy.”   And when asked how he felt about their work in the studio, he answers immediately, “Happy!  Just like in that song, Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!”
