The Musee les arts decoratif, an extension of the Louvre, is one of the most visited museums in Paris. A blockbuster exhibit, succinctly billed as Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs, is not in any way a traditional retrospective. By using multi media, and recreating vignettes from their respective time periods, the early 19th century and the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibit proves that it wasn't just mere happenstance or creativity that contributed to the behemoth success of Louis Vuitton. Both Vuitton and Jacobs were keen observers and somehow also prophetic visionaries, who were able to discern the changes in people's lives and then give them what they didn't even know they needed. Louis Vuitton saw that technology in sea and land travel would require specialized trunks and he was able to waterproof the leather of his trunks as well as develop indestructible hardware. Marc Jacobs saw that the explosion of globalization would mean that fashion had to stop being so insular and he pioneered in the collaboration with artists on handbags, fanning a mania for It bags such as the Stephen Sprouse graffiti collection, the candy colored Murakami, and the verbose, poetry laden Richard Prince collection. The exhibit made use of video projections and even music to recreate the milieus that these two creators lived in, as well as the worlds they helped to forge. Perhaps the best description of the exhibit comes from a person who was just dragged to see the show.

“Louis Vuitton – Marc Jacobs” exhibit at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Not a mere retrospective, the exhibit highlights the contributions of trunk-maker Louis Vuitton and designer Marc Jacobs (current creative director of Louis Vuitton) to the world of fashion through the parallel lenses of the industrialization of the late nineteenth century and the increased globalization of the early twenty first century. “Louis Vuitton – Marc Jacobs” runs from March 6 through September 16. |

As we walked into the courtyard of the Louvre to meet our friends for coffee in the museum's new outdoor cafe, my best friend Angelette remarked, "Even if you are not into fashion, you will enjoy that show."
